The AN/PSS-14 (formerly HSTAMIDS: Handheld Standoff Mine Detection System) revolutionized landmine detection by combining ground penetrating radar (GPR) and highly sensitive metal detector (MD) technology using advanced data fusion algorithms. This unique combination enables the system to reliably and consistently detect anti-personnel (AP) and anti-tank (AT) mines and to reject the detection of metallic clutter, increasing operator confidence and efficiency.
In order to address the emerging IED threat, L-3 CyTerra has developed the “Mini-H,” a compact, handheld system designed to detect mines and IEDs. Its algorithms are specifically designed to allow independent operation of the GPR and Metal Detectors to maximize flexibility in high-threat environments.
Explosives Trace Detection
L-3’s innovative energetic materials detection (EMD) technology represents a paradigm shift for screening trace amounts of explosives. Departing from conventional ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) detection devices, L-3’s EMD explosives trace detection products do not require carrier gases or dryer consumables, radioactive sources or reference libraries. This technological breakthrough results in immediate operator benefits, including significantly lower operating costs, an inherently safer product that does not require radioactive wipe testing, and an intrinsic capability to detect new or evolving explosive compounds without having to update reference libraries.
L-3 CyTerra’s handheld technology can rapidly ascertain the presence of personnel on the opposite side of walls and barriers. This technology promises to provide nearly instantaneous situational awareness for troops in urban environments as well as assist law enforcement officers during domestic searches.
